My name is Lauren McAvoy, and I am a rising junior at the University of California at Berkeley, studying Nutritional Science, with a minor in Global Poverty and Practice.  This blog is designed to provide the details of my summer practice experience on the island of Leyte in the Philippines, where I will be helping with a community feeding project and conducting field studies on the lifestyles of the people in rural Filipino communities.  I am working with a local NGO called Volunteer for the Visayans, whose mission is to provide social welfare services to the underprivileged communities in the Philippines.

I live to eat, but live a healthy lifestyle thanks to my love of running and the great outdoors.  I am always searching for ways to satisfy my constant wanderlust, and aspire to travel to all seven continents during this crazy adventure we call life.

  1. Hi Lauren,
This might be a little weird, but I found your blog off of Experiential Learning International’s website. I want to do the program, but the organization seems a bit sketchy, doesn’t have many reviews from other sources. Therefore, my parents are extra skeptical. I just would like to contact you to see how your experience was.

  2. Hey Lauren! I know it’s been a while since your trip, but I just want to thank you for sharing everything you did. I’m a nutrition student doing the same project for 6 months so it’s awesome to have an idea of what to expect. Thanks again! 🙂
